Thanks to many for 4th annual Marlborough Earth Day Fair

The weather was breezy and cloudy but many people came to the 4th annual Marlborough Earth Day Fair on April 30th at Ghiloni Park .  There were 33 exhibit tables, two recycling events, a walk in the park, music, food, experts, family activities and a few hundred visitors. The fair’s goal is to connect people to local resources and organizations, celebrate our local sustainability efforts and enjoy a day together in our most popular park.

There are many people to thank for this community event and at the top of the list are Green Marlborough members and several exhibitors who spend many hours making it happen.  A special thank you to Martin and Mike for partnering on exhibits and signage, and organizing the electronics and confidential documents shredding recycling efforts for the Marlborough Earth Day Fair. And a special thank you to Rick for leading the local walk and spending the whole day helping with the fair.

I’m proud of our exhibitors who were a healthy mix of community, business and education:  Green Marlborough, SunBug Solar, the Alternative Energy Store, New England Breeze, DREAM (Development, Revitalization, Energy, Architecture, Management) Collaborative, Green Workforce Training, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Organic Gardening, Ozo’s Art from Found Objects, KinderCare Learning Center, Marlborough High School, Assabet Valley Vocational School, Immaculate Conception, Hannafords, Bob’s rain barrel and compost display, Andrea’s compostable dishware display, Face Painting by Mary and her daughter, the Wellness Committee, Walk with Green Marlborough, The Calero’s seed planting and educational activity, IC Scout Pack 24, Girl Scouts 62850, EF Education, Boy Scout Pack 24, Prudential Realty, 2011 CNG car, and Prius with a bike rack.

Activities enjoyed were interacting with experts on a variety of sustainability topics, walking in nearby Marlborough State Forest , seeing school and scout exhibits, and face painting/crafting/seed planting for children.

Food included oodles of fresh fruit from Hannafords, lots of home-made baked goodies from the Girl Scouts, and S’mores baked in a solar oven.

A big thank you to EL Harvey, a local waste and recycling company from Westborough, for providing FREE electronics recycling and paper shredding at the Fair.  EL Harvey was founded in 1911 and is a fourth generation business.  EL Harvey provides residential trash pick up and recycling in towns such as Framingham, Hopkinton and Grafton.

The Marlborough DPW was not available for the Marlborough Earth Day Fair this year but is available for comments and inquiries about Marlborough recycling.  People who need recycling bins may use any large suitable container – just write the word RECYCLE on the container so the recycling truck driver knows it is for recycling.

Thank you to our Marlborough Conservation Officer who provided a tri-fold display of Conservation Lands in Marlborough and their trails.  For information about conservation lands, the Open Space Plan and Open Space Funds contact the Marlborough Conservation Office.

Thank you to our Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Marlborough permit to use the basketball court at Ghiloni Park, to Bob and the Elks for the tables, Susi for sandwiches for our hardworking crew, Judy for shooting footage for Green Marlborough TV show, GoLoCo for the festive flags, and many, many others for helping with the planning and the set up.

Thank you Ramon of Organic Gardening, Julie of Murphy Insurance, Marlborough/Hudson Unitarian Church, and Brian of Colonial Power Group, and Mary and her daughter for face painting for their donations to Green Marlborough.

Thank you to Singer P.E.James for the excellent acoustic guitar playing and singing, and Top-of-the-Slide, a Marlborough high school band, too.  Their combined TALENT provided tunes worthy of a great Earth Day event.

Many thank you’s to the residents who walked, biked and drove their most fuel efficient car to the fair. This community event was a 100% grassroots effort by and for the residents of Marlborough and could not be a success without you.

I’m proud that Marlborough is one of many communities with an Earth Day Fair to encourage and celebrate environmental sustainability.
